Breaching Homeostasis in Cells Click on the Anatomy and Physiology icon. From the Biochemistry and Cells Folder, open 2.26 Breaching homeostasis in cells notes Upload to eBackpack

Cell Injury 1. Deficiency- lack of a substance the cell needs to function example: stroke- lack of oxygen and glucose to brain due to artery blockage

Cell Injury 2. Exposure to toxins example: carbon monoxide- body fails to transport oxygen

Cell Injury 3. Trauma- physical injury example: cut, sunburn, frostbite Watch Amazing Medical Stories

Cancer Definition: Changes in the cell that alter the cell cycle

Stages of cancer 1. Hyperplasia- uncontrolled cell division

Stages of Cancer 2. Dedifferentiation- cells lose their specialized functions

Stages of Cancer 3. Invasiveness- Cancerous cells break through tissue boundaries

Stages of Cancer 4. Angiogenesis- production of blood vessels to nourish cancer cells

Stages of Cancer 5. Metastasis- Spread of cancer cells (often through the blood stream) into other tissues. Tumors often form. Metastatic cancer cells spread to other parts of the body by passing through the walls of blood or lymph vessels, riding the circulatory system, and then exiting downstream, where they form secondary tumors. Only about one in a million metastatic cells survive the journey.
