6 doc.: IEEE 802.15-10-0302-00-0006 Submission Changes from 0245-00 to 0245-04 Per motion at the last meeting, combined the four drafts (10-0195-02, 10-0196-02, 10-0198-01, 10-0201- 01) into this document. Added comments received. Changed font to Times New Roman. Renumbered chapters per IEEE standard. Moved references, definitions and abbreviations and acronyms to their appropriate chapters. Added Chapter 1 from PAR. Definitions, abbreviations and acronyms were turned into tables, then sorted alphabetically. Added Table of Contents. Changes in rev 01, done on 4/19/2010 Accepted previous changes to allow line numbering. Added line numbers. Added list of TG6 Draft contributors Changes in rev 02, done on 4/19/2010 Alphabetized list of contributors Fixed the section numbering Changes in rev 03, done on 4/21/2010 Fixed the subsection numbering to match original numbering in 10-0195-02, 10-0196-02, 10-0198-01, 10- 0201-01 documents. 7 doc.: IEEE 802.15-10-0302-00-0006 Submission Changes from 0245-04 to -05 The changes from previous revision are: Removed many inline comments left over from a contributor draft which were integrated in the normative text. Comments will or have be addressed subsequently. Made changes to the text based on comments received from Anuj, Omeni, Jin-Meng. Removed redundant definitions from the definitions table Replaced the UWB section with new rev of doc 198-03 Applied IEEE 802 standard template. Formatting of front matter according to IEEE Style guide. Fixed broken cross references to several Tables, Figures and Sections Added missing table references Made editorial changes based on comments received by May 17, 2010 Replaced UWB section 12 with doc 198-05. Replaced HBC section 14 with doc 201-02. May 2010 Arthur AstrinSlide 7

11 doc.: IEEE 802.15-10-0302-00-0006 Submission Purpose of Proposed Standard (PAR 07-0575) The purpose of the proposed standard it to provide an international standard for a short range (ie about human body range), low power and highly reliable wireless communication for use in close proximity to, or inside, a human body. Data rates, typically up to 10Mbps, will be offered to satisfy an evolutionary set of entertainment and healthcare services. Current PANs do not meet the medical (proximity to human tissue) and relevant communication regulations for some application environments. They also do not support the combination of reliability (QoS), low power, data rate and noninterference required to broadly address the breadth of body area network applications. 12 doc.: IEEE 802.15-10-0302-00-0006 Submission Need for the Project (PAR 07-0575) There is a need for a standard optimized for ultra low power devices and operation on, in or around the human body to serve a variety of applications including medical and personal entertainment. Examples of the applications served by the proposed standard are: EEG, ECG, EMG, vital signals monitoring (temperature (wearable thermometer), respiratory, wearable heart rate monitor, wearable pulse oximeter, wearable blood pressure monitor, oxygen, pH value, wearable glucose sensor, implanted glucose sensor, cardiac arrhythmia), wireless capsule endoscope (gastrointestinal), wireless capsule for drug delivery, deep brain stimulator, cortical stimulator (visual neuro-stimulator, audio neuro stimulator, Parkinson’s disease, etc…), remote control of medical devices such as pacemaker, actuators, insulin pump, hearing aid (wearable and implanted), retina implants, disability assistance, such as muscle tension sensing and stimulation, wearable weighing scale, fall detection, aiding sport training. This will include body-centric solutions for future wearable computers. In a similar vein, the same technology can provide effective solutions for personal entertainment as well. The existence of a body area network standard will provide opportunities to expand these product features, better healthcare and well being for the users. It will therefore result in economic opportunity for technology component suppliers and equipment manufacturers. May 2010 Arthur AstrinSlide 12
