Section 7.2.1 Setting Up Word Problems

Lesson Objective: Students will: Learn to set up the type of complicated word problems that are often found in calculus and other college mathematics courses. Learn to eliminate some of variables so that the desired output is expressed in terms of a single variable. Learn to solve some of these problems graphically.

Steps for solving word problems: 1.Draw a diagram. 2.Name and define the different variables involved. 3.Write (and simplify) equations that relate the different variables. 4.Identify the variable that represents the quantity needed to answer the question asked. 5.Write the variable needed in terms of one of the other variables. 6.Graph the problem.
