Language from LD Eligibility Statement Review of existing information from a variety of sources, including the parents, teacher recommendations (including Oregon state assessments, if available), the student’s cumulative records, previous IEPs or IFSPs, teacher collected work samples, and information about the child’s physical condition, background, and adaptive behavior. Evaluation report includes relevant information from these sources used in the eligibility determination.

Classroom Observation Can be used to gather information during the pre-referral process, especially in areas involving behavioral or social concerns. Required for ASD, ED, SLD, and TBI

Language from LD Eligibility Statement An observation of the child’s academic performance and behavior in a regular classroom setting, or in the case of a child less than school age or out of school, an observation in an age- appropriate environment. (Describe relevant behavior noted during observation, and its relationship to academic functioning in evaluation report.)

Purpose and use of classroom observations Teachers watch as students engage in tasks related to instruction Learning environment is also evaluated as well as the student’s interaction with classroom tasks Quality of observation depends on factors such as how precisely the behavior to be observed is defined and the methods used to gather, record, and report data Does student have necessary social and behavioral skills to engage in learning activities in a general education classroom setting?

Possible assessment questions which can lead to instructional planning and decisions What are features of instructional material? Is the pace of instruction appropriate? Do the materials match the learning needs of the student?

Are the methods of instruction appropriate for the needs of the student? Does the physical environment facilitate the student’s learning or impede it?
