Pakistan Floods 2010

Causes On 29 July 2010 flash floods and landslides caused by unusually heavy monsoon rains caused widespread flooding in North West Pakistan. Rainfall had been higher than normal for the few months leading to the flooding. The monsoon rainfall of 2010 over the whole country was the highest since 1994 and the second highest during last 50 years.

Impacts Over 200 millimetres of rain fell over a 24-hour period in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab. This was a record amount of rainfall for these to cities. 500,000 or more people had been displaced from their homes the floods had caused the deaths of at least 1,540 people 2,966 people had injuries

Short term responses Major countries provided twenty-one helicopters and 150 boats to assist affected people. The United Nations launched its relief efforts and appealed for $460 million to provide immediate help, including food, shelter and clean water. Pakistani army deployed troops to affected areas and rescued thousands of people.

Long term responses New infrastructures had to be rebuilt The country had to prevent any terrorist attacks Water supplies had to be restored People had to be cured from diseases
