Zone 1: The “Loop” or the “Business Loop” Look at the circles on the back white board The Loop is the center of economic, cultural and political life Rephrased, the Loop is the main hub of a city or town Think of downtown Minneapolis and/or St. Paul

Zone 2: “The Zone in Transition” Encircling the loop is an area of transition, which is being invaded by businesses and light manufacturing Factories Slums, ghettos Zone of poverty, degradation, and disease Underworld Recently-arrived immigrants

Zone 3: Zone of Workingmen’s Homes Inhabited workers in industries who have escaped the areas of deterioration and poverty but who want easy access to their jobs Zone 3 is not a suburban area

Zone 4: Residential Area Beyond Zone 3 of workingmen’s homes High class apartment buildings Exclusive districts of single family homes Think of Lake Calhoun & Lake of the Isles

Zone 5: Commuter Zone Farther out beyond the city limits is the Commuter Zone (Zone 5) – Think suburban areas or satellite cities These suburbs are within a thirty to sixty minute ride of the central business district (Zone 1) Think of Rosemount, Lakeville, Chaska, Chanhassen, Minnetonka, etc.
