History (Joe K.) Founded in 1613. New Netherlands (NY) was established in 1621. 1626 Peter Minuit buys Manhattan from Indians. Capital was New Amsterdam. Dutch colony. Turned over to English in 1664. New Amsterdam becomes New York.

History Continued (Joe K.) 1652-1674 Dutch fought against English. 1683 struggle in Dutch immigration, tension in the colony. 1664, New Jersey was assigned and tracked. Patroon families in 1703 owned 1.75 million acres in New York. 1750, patroon wealth grew. Map of New Amsterdam

Government (Daniel C.) 1. Royal Government: ruled directly by the English monarch 2. Governor appointed by King of England 3. Parliament made the laws for the colony while the governors made sure the colonists followed them. 4. The governor chose his own mayors and council of advisors.
