3 Formatting Disks

4 u **Caution : Formatting a disk will erase all data from it. u Insert a floppy disk into your a: (or b:) drive. u Click on My Computer u Highlight (single-click) the drive that contains the disk you wish to format. If you do not highlight the drive, “Format” will not appear in your menu.

5 Formatting Disks (cont.) u Click on File, Format. u Select the size of the floppy, select Quick Format (If you are sure the disk is not damaged. This option does not scan for bad clusters. It only removes data from the disk.) u Click ok.

6 Copying Disks

7 u Insert a floppy into the a: drive. u Click on My Computer. u Highlight (single-click) the drive you wish to copy from. If you do not highlight the drive, “Copy Disk” will not appear in your menu. u Click on File, Copy Disk. u Select the source and destination drives.

8 Copying Disks (cont.) u Click ok. u You will be prompted to insert the source disk. The computer will then read the disk and store the information to be copied. u You will then be prompted to insert the destination disk. The computer will copy the information to this disk.

9 Network Drives u A Brief Description u How to Connect Network Drives

10 Network Drives u Network drives are connections on a user’s machine to a specific directory on a fileserver in our computer room. u \\GEN1\APPS connects to the server “GEN1” and to its directory “APPS.”

11 Network Drives (cont.) u Occasionally it is necessary to connect to an additional network drive. u This depends mostly on individual needs. u Access to shared directories is user-specific. For access to a shared directory, call Jim for permission and then complete the following steps.

12 Mapping Network Drives u Click on Start, Programs, Windows Explorer. u Click on Tools, then Map Network Drive. u Choose a letter for the drive (any drive letter that is unoccupied is acceptable.) u Enter the path if you know it. u If the path is unknown, Browse the choices shown to find the appropriate drive.

13 Mapping Network Drives (cont.) u If you wish to connect to this drive every time you log on, select “Reconnect at logon.” If you will only be using it this one time, do not select that option. u Click ok.

14 Connecting to Network Printers

15 u Click on Start, Settings, Printers u Click on Add Printer u An installation guide will appear. Click Next. u Select Network Printer, Next. u Click on Browse to view the printers you may connect to.

16 Connecting to Network Printers (cont.) u Click on Entire Network and the server your printer is on u (GEN1 or GEN2) u Select the printer name. Click ok and then Next. u Choose from the list of manufacturers (most likely HP). u Choose the name of the printer from the list.
