Review for Midterm 1 Geb Thomas

Chapters Covered 1: Players in the IS Game 2: Info System Building Blocks 3: Information Systems Development 5: Systems Analysis 6: Requirements Discovery 7: Data Modeling and Analysis

Recommended Study Practice Review chapter objectives – you should know these Read the summary for each chapter. Ensure you understand the definition for each key term. Make a list of terms you forget and review. Read and answer the review questions, check your answers with the material in the chapter. Read the problems and exercises and think “could I solve that problem right now?” and think about how you would solve it.

Chapter 1: Players in the System Game Easy chapter. Make sure you understand the general definitions that are introduced (these are generally bold). Definitions of jobs and categories, IS, IT, information worker, knowledge worker. Definitions of business trends: TQM, Capability Maturity Model, Continuous Process Improvement Ethics – 10 commandments

Chapter 2: Info Sys Building Blocks Data versus Information You should understand 2.7 with it multiple interpretations. Understand it well enough that you can point to any block and explain what it involves and who’s viewpoint drives the objectives of that box.

Chapter 3: Info Sys Development System Life Cycle vrs. System Development Methodology Eight principles of system development (Get owners and users involve, use a problem-solving approach, etc.) PIECES framework for categorizing problems Phases of system development and routes

Chapter 5: Systems Analysis Systems analysis focuses on the business problem, system design on the technical solution Differentiate between structured analysis (process centered data flow diagrams), info engineering (data centered, entity relationship diagrams), and object oriented analysis. Requirements Discovery Methods Preliminary investigation techniques

Chapter 6: Requirements Discovery Differentiate between function and nonfunctional requirements Ishikawa diagram Fact-finding techniques Listening and body proxemics JRP session, techniques Interview techniques Use cases

Chapter 7: Data Modeling and Analysis Difference between logical and system models Read, and interpret an entity relationship diagram Discover entities and relationships Entity keys (primary, secondary, associative keys) Entity context diagrams Normalization of logical data models

Exam format In class, closed book Some short answers and true false (a good way to check knowledge of definitions) About 70 points. One simple design/analysis problem, about 30 points.
