28 Favelas 1/5 of Rio citizens live in shanty towns known as favelas (slums) Many are still ruled by drug traffickers or organized crime Because of crowding, unsanitary conditions, and pollution, disease is rampant and infant mortality rates are high

29 The police are trying to ‘clean out’ the favelas in time for the Olympics

31 Crime Brazil has serious problems with crime 23.8 homicides per 100,000 residents Muggings, robberies, kidnappings, and gang violence are common Police brutality and corruption are widespread

32 Deforestation in the Amazon Since 1970, over 600,000 sq km of rainforest have been destroyed It is a devastating loss of habitat and wildlife People cut down the forest to build dams, plant farms, and sell exotic hardwood
