Energy management strategy review Proton Driver Efficiency Workshop Piero Valente www.europeanspallationsource.se 2016-03-02
2
2 3 aspects of Energy Management Organization Human aspects Technology
3
6 steps to Energy Management 3 1.Kick off Energy strategy Energy check up Boundaries Responsibilities 2.Evaluate Sankey Diagram Baseline KPI’s Benchmark 3.Plan Choose the actions Plan their execution 4.Do 5. Check 6. Correct the plan
4
4 1. Kick off Understand or define the organization energy strategy Initial check-up: existing technical solutions, historical data, consumption estimate Define the boundaries −The organization itself −The local community −Energy providers −Partnership with manufacturers providing specific technical solutions −The community of similar research labs −Political stakeholders: local, national Define the responsibilities within the organization: try to involve the people who are supposed to influence the use of energy
5
5 2. Evaluate Collect information about energy consumption: Sankey Diagrams Establish a baseline Define Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) Benchmark your performances with other similar facilities Identify potential actions Collect information about energy consumption: Sankey Diagrams Establish a baseline Define Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) Benchmark your performances with other similar facilities Identify potential actions
6
6 KPI’s: definition and some suggestions SCOPE of a KPI: it helps the definition and the evaluation of the energetic performance of a system. It allows to follow its performance in time and to compare it with other systems WHAT is a KPI ? It compares an Input towards an Output Input can be related to energy Different “levels” of the Output: not necessarily related to an energy level Use concepts that are valuable throughout the organization because related to its intrinsic goals It should help facilitate the communication towards the rest of the people i.e. Energy consumption (kwh/year) per number of instruments connected
7
7 3+4. Plan and Do ACTIONS: Choose the most promising actions among those identified: HOW ? Should we choose among engineering actions only ? NO ! Actions can be categorized in: −Technical −Organizational (training) −Human factors related (e.g. change management, regular communication, facilitate people involvement) EVALUTION CRITERIA Is energy savings vs. investment the only criteria to rank the actions? NO ! Usually it doesn’t work because it’s not perceived as STRATEGIC Concepts such as: −Goal −Risk should be introduced as determining factors to influence the decisions
8
8 5. Check MONITOR & MEASURE but WHAT ? −Energy −Variables related to energy use −KPI’s variables ANALYZE: but HOW ? Saved energy cannot be measured !! One method is adjusted baseline energy Are real conditions consistent with theoretical models ?
9
9 Conclusions Broader approach: not only engineering driven but strategic value driven Defined roles within the organization: top management shall back up the efforts Communication is a key factor Look at the bigger picture: not only technical systems ! Continuous improvement strategy
