2. 2 ND GREAT AWAKENING The 2 nd Great Awakening was a Protestant religious revival movement that took place in the early 1800’s The idea began in the 1790’s and picked up momentum with many members joining in the 1820’s It represented emotion, enthusiasm and the appeal to the super natural This made many people want to reform the evil they’ve done to prepare for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ

3. TEMPERANCE MOVEMENT/PROHIBITION The Temperance was a movement against consuming alcohol Its purpose was to criticize people for drinking an excessive amount of alcohol, promote teetotalism (complete abstinence from alcohol) and to persuade the government to banish all alcohol (prohibition)

4. PREDESTINATION Predestination is the theory that all events have been willed by God and that peoples eventual fate will be determined by him Explanations of predestination often seek to address the “paradox of free will” where God knows everything there is to know about people including their past life, thoughts and feelings

5. CHARLES FINNEY Charles Finney was an American minister that had a large impact on the 2 nd Great Awakening Finney held the most revival which was large outdoor religious meetings He was known as The Father of Modern Revivalism (increasing spiritual interest in churches congregations) He also opposed Old School Presbyterian theology, was an advocate of Christian perfectionism and was a religious writer

6. DOROTHEA DIX Dorothea Dix was an American activist that fought for correct treatment of mentally insane people She was outraged that they were being kept in ordinary prisons with horrible coditions She eventually created the first string of American mental asylums and was a army nurse in the Civil War.
