What is a Portrait? What do these artworks have in common?

They are ALL portraits! A portrait is a painting, sculpture, drawing, photograph….where the face and expression is most important. A portrait is really about that individual person and who they are.

Angles and Views A portrait can be taken or made from many different angles or views. It is usually of a person’s face from the shoulders up, but not always! Worm’s Eye View Human Eye View Bird’s Eye View

2-dimensional or 3-dimensional? Portraits and can 2-D (flat) or 3-D(can walk around them). Which is 2-D and which is 3-D?

Media (or art materials) Many art materials can be used to make portraits. Can you name some?

Paint, watercolours, pencil crayon, marker, pen&ink, charcoal, pencils, wire, clay, bronze, photography, wood, pastels, etc.

Expressions are important in portraits. Can you name guess the expressions on the following slides?
