Agenda Standards: AF 1.1: Write and solve linear equations in one variable. Objectives: (1)Students will use inverse operations to solve two-step equations. 1.) Lesson 6 – Isolating the Variable 2.) Assignment - Worksheet
2
Multiple Step Equations #6 3 types: Type 1: -5 = a – 2d Type 2: -3x – z = x + 7 Type 3:
3
What is the opposite/inverse of multiplication? What is the opposite/inverse of addition? What is the opposite/inverse of subtraction? What is the opposite/inverse of division? Inverse Operations Division Subtraction Addition Multiplication
4
These are operations that undo each other. Inverse Operations For Example: 5 + 12 = 17 I get back to 5 by subtracting what I added. -12 = -12 5 = 5
5
Type 1: You need to get d all by itself! Get rid of the adding or subtracting FIRST! - a = -5 - a -2d -2 Now get rid of the multiplication or division! = d Do the Opposite! -5 = a – 2d
6
You Try: You need to get y all by itself! Get rid of the adding or subtracting FIRST! - x = 4 - x -7y -7 Now get rid of the multiplication or division! = y Do the Opposite! 4 = x – 7y
7
Type 2: Solve for x. Collect Like Terms! - x = -4x 7 z + 7 Now isolate the variable x! = x Do the Opposite! -3x – z = x + 7 - z +z -4
8
You Try: Solve for a. Collect Like Terms! - a = -3a - 9 -3a b - 9 Now isolate the variable x! = a Do the Opposite! -2a – b = a - 9 - b + b -3
9
Type 3: Solve for x. Get rid of the fraction! Now isolate the variable x! Do the Opposite!
10
You Try: Solve for a. Get rid of the fraction! Now isolate the variable x! Do the Opposite!
