2 She splits her time between Calverton and James H. Harrison. She is single-staffed in both schools. She sees 32 classes per week. Each class has about 25-35 students, including special needs and ESOL students. Calverton was built for 400-500 students, but there are about 900 in attendance and over 400 are ESOL learners. 86.8% participate in FARMS (Free and Reduced Price Meals Program). Mrs. Cavallo has been there for almost 30 years. 2014 Maryland Report Card: Prince George's County, Calverton Elementary. Maryland State Department of Education. 5  Staffing Nightmare – One half-time librarian stretches the librarian too thin and robs the kids of an essential resource.  Mostly administrative duties – checking in/out books, classroom management.  The library is small, cramped.  She prefers going to classes on occasion (happens during testing) because behavior is easier to manage.  Collection woes - The newest books circulate constantly and are worn.  Lack of classroom Management

8  Robert Frost has about 1150 students. Less than 5% are ESOL, 5.8% participate in FARMS  Katie Yu is the full-time library media specialist and Ellen Rawson is the part-time assistant.  The library hosts classes, students during lunch, and after-school activities (Homework Club, Anime Club, Battle of the Books)  They have a well-built and useful website (http://montgomeryschoolsmd.org/schools/robertfrostms/mediace nter/) and First Quarter Report: https://www.smore.com/4z1wkhttp://montgomeryschoolsmd.org/schools/robertfrostms/mediace nter/https://www.smore.com/4z1wk MCPS. 12  Great Space  Friendly Librarians  Plenty of popular fiction and graphic novels  Not just for reading  More flexibility than Calverton because classes schedule instruction. More than reading Caring Librarians

14  Science and Tech High School  Population: About 3,000 students: 500-550 are in the Science and Tech. Program; 7.4% special education; and 38.6% FARMS.  Susan Peterson is the full-time Media Specialist. She has a part-time assistant on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursdays.  She retired about 5 years ago.  The library hosts classroom instruction, students during lunch and before school, and the annual poster presentation. 2014 Maryland Report Card: Prince George's County, Eleanor Roosevelt High School. Maryland State Department of Education. Retrieved April 25, 2015 from http://www.mdreportcard.org/SpecialServices.aspx?PV=36:H:16:2114:3:N:0:14:1:1:1:1:1:1:3.

18  Busy/Organized Chaos - Students using computers, checking out books, printing homework, working individually with Mrs. Peterson.  Popular, especially during lunch time.  Bad Acoustics / Poorly designed with classrooms above.  Disorganized  Space leads to collaboration  There is a staff area with computers/printers behind the main desk. Clever way to ensure communication!

19 Differences in Programs  Staffing  Collections  Strengths – Relevant to the students and the school.  Weaknesses – No resources for teachers and Calverton is outdated overall.  Budgets  Calverton receives $4 per student for books; Robert Frost receives $11  Collaboration  Mrs. Peterson (Roosevelt HS) was most effective

20 Lessons Learned  Classroom Management is essential.  Disparities in funding and staffing are frustrating. The kids who have less tend to get less.  There is a lot of necessary discipline and policing.  Collecting late fees provide essential funding. $$  Keeping up with current literature and making displays are important.  Making time for collaboration can be difficult, but it’s essential.  Fight for your space! People will always try to invade it.  Become friends with teachers!
