Second Order of Holy Communion Page 119 FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

WELCOME SENTENCE OF THE DAY It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I live now in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Galatians 2.20

OPENING HYMN

Be still, for the presence of the Lord, the Holy One, is here; come bow before Him now with reverence and fear: in Him no sin is found - we stand on holy ground. Be still, for the presence of the Lord, the Holy One is here.

Be still, for the glory of the Lord is shining all around; He burns with holy fire, with splendor He is crowned: how awesome is the sight – our radiant King of light! Be still, for the glory of the Lord is shining all around.

Be still, for the power of the Lord is moving in this place: He comes to cleanse and heal, to minister His grace – no work too hard for Him. In faith receive from Him. Be still, for the power of the Lord is moving in this place. © 1986 David Evans, Kingsway’s Thankyou MusicMP50 CCLI: 61732

‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’

Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, with a sincere and a true heart.

Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Christ Jesus, whose glory was poured out like perfume, and who chose for our sake to take the form of a slave: may we also pour out our love with holy extravagance, that our lives may be fragrant with you. Amen

1 Kings 21.1-10, 15-21a LPB 564 Old Testament Reading

1 Hear my words, O Lord, give heed to my groaning: listen to my cry, you that are my king and my God. 2 In the morning when I pray to you, surely you will hear my voice: at daybreak I lay my prayers before you, and look up. 3 For you are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness: nor can any evil dwell with you. 4 The boastful cannot stand in your sight: you hate all those that work mischief.

5 Those who speak lies you destroy: you abhor the treacherous, O Lord, and those that are stained with blood. 6 But because of your great goodness I will come into your house: I will bow down toward your holy temple in awe and fear of you. 7 Lead me, O Lord, in your righteousness, for my enemies lie in wait: make straight your way before me.

As the deer pants for the water, so my soul longs after You. You alone are my heart's desire and I long to worship You. You alone are my strength, my shield, to You alone may my spirit yield. You alone are my heart's desire and I long to worship You.

I want You more than gold or silver, only You can satisfy. You alone are the real joy giver and the apple of my eye. You alone are my strength, my shield, to you alone may my spirit yield. You alone are my heart's desire and I long to worship You.

You're my friend and you're my brother, even though You are a king. I love You more than any other, so much more than anything. You alone are my strength, my shield, to you alone may my spirit yield. You alone are my heart's desire and I long to worship You. ©1983 Martin Nystrom/Restoration Music/Sovereign Lifestyle Music MP37 CCLI:61732

A Reading from Luke Chapter 7, Verses 36-8.3 Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ For the Gospel of the Lord, Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

SERMON

Let us together affirm the faith of the Church: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Accept our prayers through Jesus Christ our Lord, who taught us to pray, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against any one; so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. Mark 11.25

SPEAK O LORD

Speak O Lord as we come to you to receive the food, of Your Holy word. Take Your Truth, plant it deep in us shape and fashion us in your likeness; that the light of Christ might be seen today in our acts of love and our deeds of faith. Speak O Lord, and fulfill in us all Your purposes for Your glory.

Teach us, Lord, full obedience, Holy reverence true humility. Test our thoughts and our attitudes in the radiance of Your purity. Cause our faith to rise, cause our eyes to see. Your majestic love and authority. Words of power that can never fail; let their truth prevail over unbelief.

Speak, O Lord, and renew our minds; Help us grasp the heights of Your plans for us. Truths unchanged from the dawn of time, that will echo down through eternity. And by grace we’ll stand on Your promises; and by faith we’ll walk as You walk with us. Speak, O Lord, till Your church is built, and the earth is filled with Your glory. MP 1350

Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our offerings for your Glory And for the service of your kingdom. Blessed be God for ever.

All glory and honour be yours always and everywhere, mighty Creator, everliving God. We give you thanks and praise for our Saviour Jesus Christ, who by the power of your Spirit was born of Mary and lived as one of us. By his death on the cross and rising to new life, he offered the one true sacrifice for sin and obtained an eternal deliverance for his people.

Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and saying: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

Merciful God, we thank you for these gifts of your creation, this bread and wine, and we pray that by your Word and Holy Spirit, we who eat and drink them may be partakers of Christ's body and blood. On the night he was betrayed Jesus took bread; and when he had given you thanks he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying,

'Take, eat. This is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.' After supper, he took the cup, and again giving you thanks he gave it to his disciples, saying, 'Drink from this, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.‘ Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

Therefore we do as our Saviour has commanded: proclaiming his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again, we celebrate, with this bread and this cup, his one perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world.

Renew us by your Holy Spirit, unite us in the body of your Son, and bring us with all your people into the joy of your eternal kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, with whom, and in whom, in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, we worship you, Father, in songs of never-ending praise: Blessing and honour and glory and power are yours for ever and ever. Amen.

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread.

The gifts of God for the people of God. Come let us take this holy sacrament of the body and blood of Christ in remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving.

Holy Communion Hymn: The Power of The Cross MP1217

Oh, to see the dawn of the darkest day: Christ on the road to Calvary. Tried by sinful men, torn and beaten, then- nailed to a cross of wood. This, the power of the cross: Christ became sin for us. Took the blame, bore the wrath- we stand forgiven at the cross.

Oh, to see the pain written on Your face, bearing the awesome weight of sin. Every bitter thought, every evil deed crowning Your blood- stained brow. This, the power of the cross: Christ became sin for us. Took the blame, bore the wrath- we stand forgiven at the cross.

Now the daylight flees, now the ground beneath quakes as its Maker bows His head. Curtain torn in two, dead are raised to life; “Fin – ished!” the victory cry. This, the power of the cross: Christ became sin for us. Took the blame, bore the wrath- we stand forgiven at the cross.

Oh, to see my name written in the wounds, for through Your suffering I am free. Death is crushed to death, life is mine to live, won through Your selfless love. This, the power of the cross: Son of God- slain for us. What a love! What a cost! We stand forgiven at the cross. Words and Music: Keith Getty and Stuart Townend CCLI 61732 MP12 17

Gracious God, we thank you that in this sacrament you assure us of your goodness and love. Accept our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving and help us to grow in love and obedience that we may serve you in the world and finally be brought to that table where all your saints feast with you for ever.

Most loving God, you send us into the world you love. Give us grace to go thankfully and with courage in the power of your Spirit.

The peace of God which passes all understanding keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen
