Waves
2
What is a wave? A wave is a disturbance that carries energy from one place to another What happens to a boat when a wave hits it?
3
What carries Waves? Most waves NEED something to travel through Medium- The material that a wave travels through What would a sound wave travel through? What does an earthquake wave travel through?
4
Waves Waves that NEED a medium to travel through are called MECHANICAL WAVES
5
The duck scenario What would happen to a duck in the water when a wave moves under it??? Cork in fish tank demo The duck would move up and down Waves do not take a medium with them, they just move through it (the water stays in place after the wave has moved through)
6
What causes waves? Waves are caused by vibrations Let’s think of some examples where vibrations might cause waves to occur…
7
Types of Waves Waves are put into groups based on how they move There are 3 basic wave categories
8
What is a Transverse Waves Waves where the particles in the medium move perpendicular to the wave motion (the wave travels across, but the medium just moves up and down) Slinky demonstration
9
What is a Longitudinal Wave? The particles in the medium move parallel to the direction that the wave is traveling Slink Demonstration
10
What is a Surface Wave? Are a combination of transverse and longitudinal waves Occur at the surface of two different mediums (air and water) Up and down motion combines with the back and forth motion= circular motion
