What are waves

What is a Wave? A wave is a disturbance that transfers energy from place to place http://www.brainpop.com /science/energy/waves/pr eview.weml http://www.brainpop.com /science/energy/waves/pr eview.weml

What carries waves? The Material that waves travel through is called a medium. Not all waves require a medium. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ckjttBin5 8&hd=1

What types of waves require a medium? Waves that require a medium through which to travel are called mechanical waves. Examples of mediums; water, air, earth, rope etc.

What causes waves? Mechanical waves are produced when a source of energy causes a medium to vibrate. A vibration is a repeated up and down or back and forth movement.

How are mechanical waves classified? Mechanical waves are classified by how they move Rope and slinky demo Describe how the waves move

What are Transverse waves Transverse means the matter moves up and down while the energy moves across. Ex. Rope, Ocean waves http://phet.colorado.edu/en/contributions/vi ew/3447 http://phet.colorado.edu/en/contributions/vi ew/3447 Tsunami http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJBS94GVyuo&feature=relmfu

What are the parts of a wave? Crest- The high part of a transverse wave Trough- The low part of a wave.

What are longitudinal waves? Longitudinal means the matter moves back and forth (parallel to) while the energy moves across. These are also known as compression waves. Ex. Sound, slinky Earthquake http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=- zNyVPsj8zc&feature=related

Draw figure 4 on page 514 Label the crest trough and compression and rarefaction. Also label the rest position and types of waves.

Quiz 1.What is a mechanical wave? 2.How are mechanical waves produced? 3.What are the two types of mechanical waves? 4.How does a transverse wave move through a medium? 5.How does a longitudinal wave move through a medium?
