How Scientists can Manipulate Genes:
3
Examples of GMOs Golden Rice- modified with Beta Carotene Gene GM Soybeans- modified with Omega-9 Fatty Acid Gene AquAdvantage Salmon- modified with Growth Gene from Chinook Salmon Purple Tomato- modified with purple pigment (antioxidant) from snapdragon plant Bt Corn- modified with Bt Delta Endotoxin – Controls caterpillars that feed on crops
4
Scientists can insert a “gene of interest” from one organism into another organism This process is called gene splicing And is used to create genetically modified organisms (GMOs)
5
Gene of interest is “cut” from genome using Restriction Enzymes You can’t just put the gene of interest into the DNA of another organism—you need a “vector” to transfer the gene over – Plasmid: small circular piece of bacterial DNA that contains non- essential genes
6
Genetic Engineering of Human Insulin
7
