ACTIVE CULTURAL PROJECTS FOR THE LATIN CLASSROOM! Christopher Buczek, Ph.D. ACL Institute 2016

Why is it essential to integrate Roman culture into the curriculum? Modern society derives from the classical tradition Compare and contrast Roman and present customs Most importantly, let students know the Romans were a living people – How would a Roman view our culture?

Diēs Lūstricus On the tenth day of life, a Roman child would be given a name and a bulla - a good-luck charm that would protect them during youth Middle school students chose Roman names at the beginning of the year I decided we could have a class diēs lūstricus - but instead of a bulla, they’d present a poster about themselves
4
Roman Name Posters “Quis sum?” Students pick name first week of school Poster assigned soon after - make a visual description of who you are 7 th graders - find Latin words that describe you, or use “mihi placet…” with activities 8 th graders - write 3-5 sentences about yourself Add pictures, make a collage of things

Why were they important? – Three interesting (but relevant) facts about this group – How did this people influence modern history? – What made you choose this group? What have you learned?
