2. Unit 9: Specialized Investigations: Terrorism  This unit explores the phenomenon of terrorism. While terrorism itself has been associated with more traditional criminal acts, the desired result of terrorist groups is to effect a governmental or societal change. We will explore the origins of terrorism by studying foreign and domestic terrorist groups and becoming familiar with their ideologies. We will also look at criminal acts associated with terrorist activities, as well as the use of proactive and reactive investigative strategies.  You will also complete your Final Essays and submit your Final Project in this unit.

7.  The discussion of terrorism would not be complete without an attempt to define its various types. Examples include international terrorism directed by a foreign government, Arab radicalism (Palestine liberation movement and Islamic extremists), and domestic terrorism: Groups of two or more people whose activities are directed at elements of the U.S. government or population (no foreign direction).

8.  Terrorism investigations depend largely on intelligence and analysis that involve establishing a prima facie using informants, surveillance, and records. Terrorist groups and their MOs may vary from act to act. It is important that the investigator acquire as much background information as possible regarding the group or individual under investigation.

9.  Terrorists may employ the use of chemical attack by means of nerve gas, mustard gas, and other caustic substances. Ecological terrorism may involve the sabotage of natural settings to protect the environment, such as placing spikes in trees about to be harvested by logging companies. Assassinations committed by terrorist groups employ the use of explosives and firearms. Kidnappings, whether accomplished by aircraft hijackings or individual incidents, are used to gain attention and as a bargaining tool to have demands met.

Final Project  Write a 2 to 3 page paper (excluding cover page) responding to the following:  Illustrate the ethical and legal preparations required for successful prosecution of a case.  Research the various crimes discussed in this course and the techniques used to investigate those crimes.  Choose at least 2 specific offenses (Homicide, Arson, Burglary, etc.)  Consult at least 2 research sources

14. Final Project  What are the specific ethical considerations that need to be addressed when investigating the specific crime?  How can we reduce the ethical problems involved in the investigation of the crimes you selected?  What prosecution problems could arise when the case is presented for trial if the investigator was unethical?  What ethical issues are directly related to the prosecutor in the case?

15.  All text pages should be double-spaced and in 12- point font.  Cite your sources using the APA method to the best of your ability This is excellent practice as you will be using APA throughout your time at Kaplan  You may consult the Kaplan Online Library, the Internet, the textbook and other course material, and any other outside resources in supporting your task, using proper citations in APA style
