HEALTHY BONES & MUSCLES Joints
2
Joints
3
Types of joints The joint is the point where two or more bones meet. There are three main types of joints; Fibrous (immoveable), Cartilaginous (partially moveable) and the Synovial (freely moveable) joint.
4
Fibrous Joints Fibrous (immovable joints): This type of joint is held together by strong, fibrous, connective tissues and as the name suggests, they permit no movement. Examples are where the teeth are held to their bony sockets at the jawbone & where the bones of the skull come together.
5
Cartilaginous Joints Cartilaginous joints (or slightly moveable joints) are connected by cartilage & allow partial movement. The stacked vertebrae bones in your spine are held together by cartilaginous joints.
6
Synovial Joints Synovial joints (or freely moveable joints) provide the most movement and are the most common of all joints found in the body. Some examples include; the shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees & ankles.

Things to help for your test :) Distinguish between the three types of muscles in your body & give an example for each Describe how skeletal muscle contraction takes place - beginning with an electrical impulse coming from the brain Compare the 3 different types of muscle contractions & give examples of each Explain how bones are connected together @ joints Describe the basic movements that occur by giving examples of each type of movement

Things to help for your test :) Draw a rough illustration & label the following A) skeletal muscle with the muscle fibre, fascicles, perimysium, epimysium, & muscle tendon B) synovial joint & highlight the following parts; joint cavity, joint capsule, articulating cartilage, bursae, ligaments, tendons Be able to label muscles, joints & movements
