5 Transitional time: leaving childhood behind. Their bodies and lives are changing.

6 Mostly interested in the present: they live in an immediate, self- involved place. Their behavior can be confusing. It vacillates from being ‘mature’ to being ‘babyish’.

7 It is a very exploratory time of life. The child has a lot of interests. They are searching for meaning in their lives. School assignments are boring.

8 May start engaging in risky behaviour such as experimenting with smoking, drinking and drugs and often brag about these things.

9 Desire for independence. Need for peer rather than adult approval. Face challenges in organization. Lack motivation.

15 THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN MAKING THE TIMETABLE Time to leave school. What to do when one gets home What activities are they engaged in We are a day school. Whatever you do, Saturday is a crucial work day.

16 Home/school timetable and activities Harmonise where possible. Mid-CAT and CAT weekends should not coincide with family activities e.g. outings, visits, parties etc.

17 SOCIAL LIFE A. Friends:  Cultivate a genuine interest in his friends  How much time is spent with friends?  Age of friends-advise them to avoid having older friends

18  Discourage ‘hanging out’.  Policy on visits, sleepovers, etc.  Get to know the parents of the friends

29  Don’t dwell too much on the future: he may never see it. Deal with the “now”  Be consistent.

30  Present a united fronted.  Spend quality time with them  Remember to have the ‘Man Talk’

31  Remember the developmental stage that your son is in.  This project requires patience, tact and time!
