8 th grade Vocabulary Word, Definition, model Unit 6: Linear Models and Patterns of Association

MODEL: Consider the year and the number of points scored. Two variables, year and points. Unit 6 Bivariate Data DEFINITION: DATA EXPRESSED IN TWO VARIABLES, USUALLY RELATED IN SOME WAY.

MODEL: Consider the number of toys in each color category. Unit 6 Categorical Data DEFINITION: WHEN DATA IS SORTED INTO SPECIFIC GROUPS WITHIN THE DATA SET.

MODEL: Height of 6 th graders, 10 th graders and 21 year olds girls. Unit 6 Cluster DEFINITION: GROUPING OF DATA IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO EACH OTHER.

MODEL: It costs $2 to get into the park, then add other costs. Unit 6 Initial Value DEFINITION: THE STARTING POINT ON A GRAPH, USUALLY THE Y- INTERCEPT.

MODEL: As a person gets older, their show size increases. Unit 6 Linear Association DEFINITION: AS ONE VARIABLE CHANGES, THE OTHER VARIABLE CHANGES BY A SET AMOUNT. THUS A CONSTANT RATE OF CHANGE BETWEEN TWO VARIABLES.

MODEL: As the area of a picture changes, the amount of marker needed to color it changes. Unit 6 Linear Model DEFINITION: AN EQUATION OF THE FORM Y = MX + B, OR A GRAPH OF A LINE.

MODEL: The warmer the temperature, the more water your body needs. Unit 6 Linear Relationship DEFINITION: A RELATIONSHIP WHERE THE RATE OF CHANGE IS FIXED OR CONSTANT.

MODEL: The longer you use a pen, the less ink it has in it. Unit 6 Negative Association DEFINITION: AS ONE VARIABLE CHANGES, THE OTHER CHANGES IN THE OPPOSITE WAY.

MODEL: The relationship between eye color and shoe size. Unit 6 Non-Linear Association DEFINITION: NO CLEAR OR DIRECT CORRELATION BETWEEN TWO VARIABLES - RATE OF CHANGE IS NOT CONSTANT.

MODEL: The water bill each month is about the same, except for the time you left the water running while on vacation. Unit 6 Outlier DEFINITION: A NUMBER THAT IS 1.5 TIMES LARGER OR SMALLER THAN THE INTERQUARTILE RANGE OF A SET OF DATA.

MODEL: The taller you are, the longer your legs. Unit 6 Positive Association DEFINITION: AS ONE VARIABLE CHANGES, THE OTHER VARIABLE CHANGES IN THE SAME WAY. BOTH INCREASE OR BOTH DECREASE.

MODEL: AS YOU DRIVE AN HOUR, YOU MOVE 55 MILES. Unit 6 Rate of Change DEFINITION: A RATE OF CHANGE IS A RATE THAT DESCRIBES HOW ONE QUANTITY CHANGES IN RELATION TO ANOTHER QUANTITY

MODEL: Turns occurrences into a percent of all trials. Unit 6 Relative Frequency DEFINITION: THE NUMBER OF TIMES THAT THE EVENT OCCURS DURING EXPERIMENTAL TRIALS, DIVIDED BY THE TOTAL NUMBER OF TRIALS CONDUCTED.

MODEL: Unit 6 Scatterplot DEFINITION: A GRAPH OF INDIVIDUAL POINTS. IT CAN BE USED TO EXAMINE THE POSSIBLE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN TWO QUANTITIES OR VARIABLES.

MODEL: Unit 6 Slope DEFINITION: THE RATE OF CHANGE FOR A LINE.

MODEL: Unit 6 Two Way Table DEFINITION: A TABLE THAT ORGANIZES DATA OVER TWO (OR MORE) CATEGORIES WITHIN THE SAMPLE.

MODEL: Unit 6 Y-Intercept DEFINITION: THE ORDERED PAIR THAT SHOWS THE POINT WHERE A FIGURE AND THE Y-AXIS INTERSECT.
