Cultural Diversity Definition: cultural variety and cultural differences that exist in the world, a society, or an institution Results from differences based Culture values, beliefs, attitudes, languages, symbols, rituals, behaviors, customs of a group of people Ethnicity based on national origin Racial factors based on physical or biological characteristics Healthcare providers must have sensitivity, ability to recognize and appreciate the characteristics of all clients/patients

Cultural Blindness A condition where persons assume that cultural differences do not exist. Can you think of a time this has occurred? Is this good or bad? Why?

Cultural Diversity Cultural diversity includes:
Family organization Language Personal space Touching Eye contact Gestures Health care beliefs Spirituality (individual) Religion (organized group) Impacts beliefs about birth, death, health, illness, and health care Muslims – do not show the soles of your feet – dirty , insulting Evil Eye – look that can cause injury or bad luck at person whom directed - Arabic, Hebrew, Turkish, Greek, Spanish Thumbs up – West: Job well done Latin America, West Africa, Greece, Russia – same as middle finger Middle East – worst insult Germany, Japan – means number one.

Folk Remedies Definition: treatment of ailments outside clinical medicine by remedies and simple measures based on experience and knowledge handed down from generation to generation can create a delay in seeking professional health care
