Do Now – May [18+2 2 -15], 2009 What is it? Rearrange the symbols for the elements and use the clues provided to figure out the words. Example: Something to follow Thorium + Protactinium 1. You’ll want to be first! Cerium + Radium 2. Masked bandit Nitrogen + Cobalt + Radium + Oxygen 3. Not anybody Oxygen + Boron + Dysprosium + Nitrogen + Oxygen 4. Beware of this snake! Oxygen + Carbon + Boron + Radium Th + PaPATH

The answers are … 1. You’ll want to be first! Cerium + Radium 2. Masked bandit Nitrogen + Cobalt + Radium + Oxygen 3. Not anybody Oxygen + Boron + Dysprosium + Nitrogen + Oxygen 4. Beware of this snake! Oxygen + Carbon + Boron + Radium Ce + RaRACE N + Co + Ra + O RACOON O + B + Dy + N + O NOBODY O + C + B + RaCOBRA

Agenda Do Now/Announcements Neutralization Reactions Work Time Begin Stoichiometry Work Time Exit Ticket
5
Objectives SWBAT predict the products of acid- base neutralization reactions. SWBAT interpret chemical equations using stoichiometry.
6
Inside your insides… the human stomach The human stomach produces hydrochloric acid (HCl), commonly known as "stomach acid“ or “stomach juice” It is generated in the digestion process, but when a person eats something requiring the stomach to work overtime in digesting it—say, a pizza—the stomach may generate EXCESS hydrochloric acid, and the result is "heartburn"
7
Inside your insides… the human stomach When this happens, people often take antacids, which contain a base such as… aluminum hydroxide (Al[OH] 3 ) or magnesium hydroxide (Mg[OH] 2 )
8
Inside your insides… the human stomach When a person takes an antacid, this person performs a neutralization reaction…perhaps without even knowing it! HCl + Al(OH) 3 → AlCl 3 + H 2 O ACID BASESALT WATER Question: What do you think the pH of the products is?
9
Neutralization Reaction A neutralization reaction is a reaction in which an acid and a base react in aqueous solution to produce a salt A salt is an ionic compound made up of a cation from a base and an anion from an acid Neutralization is a DOUBLE-REPLACEMENT REACTION!
10
Neutralization Reactions HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H 2 O ACID BASESALT WATER
11
Try these! Write balanced equations for the following Acid-base neutralization reactions: 1.Nitric acid and cesium hydroxide 2.Hydrobromic acid and calcium hydroxide 3.Sulfuric acid and potassium hydroxide 4.Acetic acid and ammonium hydroxide
12
Stoichiometry Stoichiometry is the study of quantitative relationships between amounts of reactants used and products formed by a chemical reaction Scientists use stoichiometry to plan reactions!
13
Stoichiometry Stoichiometry is based on the Law of Conservation of Matter – matter is neither created or destroyed
14
Interpreting Equations 4 Fe + 3 O 2 2 Fe 2 O 3 “4 moles of iron react with 3 moles of oxygen gas to produce 2 moles of iron(III) oxide”
15
Interpreting Equations C 3 H 8 + 5 O 2 3 CO 2 + 4H 2 O “1 mole of propane (C 3 H 8 ) reacts with 5 moles of oxygen gas to produce 3 moles of carbon dioxide and 4 moles of water”
16
How many moles needed? (moles – moles) C 3 H 8 + 5 O 2 3 CO 2 + 4H 2 O If you start with 10.0 moles of propane (C 3 H 8 ), how many moles of oxygen gas is needed to fully combust (react)?
17
How many moles produced? (moles – moles) C 3 H 8 + 5 O 2 3 CO 2 + 4H 2 O If you start with 10.0 moles of propane (C 3 H 8 ), how many moles of carbon dioxide will be produced?
18
Exit Ticket 1.Finish and balance the following chemical equation for an acid-base neutralization reaction: __LiOH + __HCl __? + __? 2. Using the above equation, answer the following question: If you start with 2.5 moles of lithium hydroxide, how many moles of the salt is produced?
