Outline Lilly Conference Session Data collection Survey questions Main conclusions Examples from courses I have taught CHM 470 – Microsoft Word CHM 205 lab – Blackboard (Assignment or TurnItIn) CHM 373 – Blackboard TurnItIn 2

2014 Lilly Conference Session Effective Feedback in Undergraduate Programs: A Study from the Students' Perspective Presenters: Nanette Cooperman & Carolyn Berenato, Saint Joseph's University, PA 3
4
Importance Effective feedback is 1 component of instruction Quality and effectiveness of feedback is crucial to promote learning Significant amount of research concerning feedback, but very little from the student’s point of view Goal: To gather information from students about the type of feedback they prefer 4
5
Data Collection Participants were all undergraduate education majors (~8- students responded) Survey was sent anonymously by registrar’s office using Blackboard 29 close-ended & 4 open-ended questions Planned to send a follow-up survey to determine the effectiveness of the study – not presented at the conference 5

Major Conclusions 50% Electronic Feedback: handed back quicker; not individualized; contained less positive comments Hand-written Feedback: students felt more connected with the instructor; students desired to do better on the next assignment 11

Happy Balance? 23 Include positive comments in all assignments Give feedback beyond only marking a rubric Can associate comments with sections of rubric using TurnItIn of Blackboard If have multiple assignments, give detailed feedback for 1 st assignment
