1 Flipped Fridays Waves of Innovation Large Lecture Engagement Strategies May 5, 2016

2 Why Flipped Fridays?  Chem 4B is a course for freshmen chemistry majors with a heavy analytical chemistry focus and a research project  Specifically I wanted to improve student understanding and performance  Exams  Labs  Students’ research projects  Provide students a model of effective peer work  Build community in the classroom

3 How was it done? Before Class  My preparation  Complete backwards design assignment to set goals for the session  Write new (or tailor old) exam level questions  Generate key, send to GSIs for comment  Before class  I recorded a short video lecture and post on YouTube  Students watch the short video lecture lecture  Students take a short quiz on bcourses In Class and Beyond  During class  Students are seated by lab section  Work in small groups on problems  GSIs, faculty mingle  Answers for select problems are presented  Students correct work and reflect on learning  After class  Worksheets are scanned and graded in Gradescope (completed/corrected work and reflection statements) When I really noticed the patch of grey hair in the back of my head When I snuck up on some students One of many times I was waving my arms Online lecture
