China China is attempting to gain wealth and power by increasing trade with Japan, controlling the population, and limiting the information available to Chinese citizens.

China-Japanese Tensions -In Sino-Japanese War, Japan and China wanted control of Korea. A treaty was signed resolve disagreements-neither country obeyed -Nanking Massacre (1937-1945) Imperial Japanese Army invaded/occupied China -Killed many innocent Chinese citizens -Disagreements over inhabited islands near Japan -Caused corruption- disputes exist today

Reason for Aiding Japan -After earthquake/tsunami in March 2011, China sent rescue teams/supplies to help victims -Still has hatred toward Japan -Seen as good neighbor -Get on good side to increase trade -Japan will need goods to rebuild country -China will grow economically through trade

Controlling China's Population With The One Child Policy 1970’s: China’s government implemented family planning policies to control population growth and the huge population of China One Child Policy limits all families in urban areas to one child

Positive and Negative Effects In the last 30 years, China's population has grown <40% Gender imbalance (current ratio of males to females being born in China is about 120:100) 24 million men are unable to find wives Increased human trafficking, forced marriages, and prostitution in China Increased crime Decreased political and economic stability

-China has been blocking certain events and information from being viewed -Neutralize online criticism -Filters do not affect Hong Kong -Some feel this is a violation of basic human rights to public information The Great Firewall of China

Google vs. China -Companies (mainly Google) have spent a great deal retaliating against this issue - Google was asked to allow China to filter searches - Google stopped blocking access to info & linked their China site to Hong Kong where there is no filtering - Soon after Google was hacked by China -Google was blocked

China is willing to reduce the rights of citizens for the benefit of the country as a whole. Ultimately, China will do whatever is necessary to grow economically and politically, and to be seen globally as a wealthy and powerful nation. Lauren and Morgan
