What we (OSU) expect students to learn… Assessment on many levels: – Learning Goals for Graduates – Baccalaureate Core Student Learning Outcomes by Category – College Learning Outcomes – School / Department / Concentration Outcomes We have made great strides but still have a long way to go to organize and close the loop..

Where PHHS is headed Where we have been: – 4 units (departments) – Most units have had their own list of outcomes Even specific outcomes at the option level – Some units have professional programs with accreditation – Wide variety of rich assessment techniques used to assess learning

Where PHHS is headed In the self-study period of accreditation for College of Public Health and Human Sciences As a college we now are responsible to a single accrediting agency & the University & several other program accreditation agencies.

Council of Education on Public Health Model for Assessment of Student Learning Competencies (list for each major) – College level Common across all levels – Area level Specific to major or concentration Learning Objectives – At course level

Competencies – related to general skill application Learning Outcome – the incremental learning experiences at the course and experiential levels that lead to the development of the competencies

Concluding Thoughts Assessment only as good as we are in using the information. Need systems in place that cover as much as the landscape as possible Learning Objectives (at the course level) need to map to competencies Fresh look at Learning Objectives at course level may be helpful in curricular streamlining.
