Lesson 045 Learning Goal: (You should be able to…) Explain phase changes using models Success Criteria: (Can you …) Complete organizer showing phase changes Answer questions about particles in each phase Answer questions about how and why the phases change using the models Describe models of various phases

How to organize lesson 045 The lessons Agenda was: Go through ppt on matter Use all the hyperlinks/websites Use Electronic Organizer OR lined paper for: Notes Answers to questions Summary Organizer

Vocabulary Solid Liquid Gas Element Compound Homogeneous mixture Heterogeneous mixture Bose-Einstein condensate Plasma

Write To Think 045 Obtain the correct laptop, log in, and carry on with yesterdays work: (Open chrome, Find my website, Find the unit Classifying Matter and yesterday’s lesson 043, Download the Ppt. “States of Matter lesson 043” AND your organizer) RE READ THE FRONT OF YOUR SUMMARY ORGANIZER Now carry on with the work you started yesterday. In 30 minutes time you should finish the following: SOLID, LIQUID, GAS (PLASMA & BOSE-EINSTEIN CONDENSTATE) CHANGES IN MATTER Go through the ppt. and use the hyperlinks to animations etc. Take notes to help you answer ALL the questions in the ppt. hyperlinks AND on the front of the organizer Get ‘STAMPED’ at the right points! (6 places)

Summary Organizer 1.Re read the front and look at the back! 2.Purpose “EXPLAIN PHASE CHANGES USING SCIENTIFIC MODELS” 3.The model is “Ph ase or state of matter particle model” 4.Select information AND pictures from your notes to put onto the summary organizer 5.What information will you use? 6.Where will you put the information? 7.How? 8.Why? 9.This is a great review tool or learning strategy 10.I will be collecting it and grading it on Monday

Summary Questions (Review) USE THE SCIENTIFIC PARTICLE MODELS OF THE PHASES OF MATTER TO HELP ANSWER THE FOLLOWING: 1.Describe the position, movement and bonding of particles in a liquid. 2.Place the phases of matter in order of energy content from HIGHEST to lowest. 3.Explain in detail HOW a solid can change into a liquid? 4.Explain in detail WHY a liquid can change into a gas? 5.Why is it easier to boil water on top of Mt Everest? (HINT: Much lower atmospheric pressure) 6.Explain why pumping up a basketball or football makes it hard? 7.Explain why the liquid air freshener inside the container becomes a gas when you press the release? 8.Explain in detail WHY you can smell someone else’s perfume or deodorant? 9.Draw a labeled phase or state particle model of a heterogeneous mixture such as sandy water.

End of lesson Slides after this are for teacher use if needed but were not a part of the lesson.

Phases or States of Matter Open chrome Find my website Find the unit Classifying Matter and today’s lesson 043 Download the ppt “States of Matter lesson 043” AND Lesson 043 GO Drag onto desktop and open Open in slideshow mode to first slide MATTER then screen down

Phases or States of Matter Read the front of the paper SUMMARY organizer Look at the back FYI: There isn’t enough room! Lined paper or ‘electronic paper’ to take notes. (See lesson 043 for an organizer) REM: notes are NOT cut and pasting … that’s a waste of time. Complete ALL of the ppt and hyperlinks etc. FIRST before trying to put information into the organizer (tomorrow) … it’s a summary of your findings!

Phases or States of Matter Today: Go through the ppt. and use the hyperlinks to animations etc. Take notes to help you answer ALL the questions in the ppt hyperlinks AND on the front of the organizer Get ‘STAMPED’ at the right points! (6 places) TOMORROW: Complete the paper summary organizer by answering the questions on the front Extras!!?

Phases or States of Matter For each phase or state: Read the power point slide Take notes about the information Open the hyperlink Take notes about the information Answer ALL questions (ppt, hyperlink, etc.) Self check and teacher stamp 6 checks
