Mat for Macbeth drawing had a note beginning 'pair...' and the number '1'. Henry VI illustration had a two is marked on the verso of its mat. The pair are similar in coloring, being mostly shades of rust and browns. Their size is quite close, Henry VI measuring 8 x 10 and Macbeth 8 1/8 x 10 7/8 in. Neither item is signed on the surface of the painting. Notes (Hamnet) History: There is a smaller version, painted in shades of blue and green, of the same scene from Macbeth cataloged as part of a Wright watercolor series (ART Box W951 no.75). Notes (Hamnet) Provenance: Items were purchased by the Folgers from Maggs Bros., March-April, 1924. Notes (Hamnet) Subject: ART Box W951 no.159 pictures the banqueting scene from Macbeth, Act III, Sc. 4. Macbeth is shown center, frightened by Banquo's Ghost pictured right. Lady Macbeth is at the right of Macbeth holding onto his arm. ART Box W951 no.158 depicts the death of Cardinal Beaufort in King Henry VI, pt. 2, Act III, Sc. 3.
