How is the animal body organized?
2
Organization of Animals
specialized cells are organized in a hierarchy. Levels of organization of increasing or decreasing order. Example: white-tailed deer.
3
Ex. Increasing hierarchy of structure within a person:
Cell Heart muscle cell Tissue Heart Tissue Organ Heart Organ System Circulatory System Organism Human
4
Cell – the basic unit of life. Smallest unit
5
Tissue – a collection of similar cells that
perform a particular, but limited, function. Ex: epithelial tissue (skin), connective tissue, muscle tissue, and nerve tissue. Nerve tissue
6
Cell Tissue Organ – two or more types of tissue that work together to perform a complex life function. Ex: stomach - made up of smooth muscle, longitudinal muscle and circular muscle.
7
Organ System – groups of organs working
Cell Tissue Organ Organ System – groups of organs working together to perform a vital life function Ex: digestive system has many organs : tongue, trachea, stomach, liver and intestines
8
Organism – two or more organs which function together for life
Cell Tissue Organ Organ System Organism – two or more organs which function together for life
