Building up of strong armed forces and a powerful military. Before World War I tension and rivalry amongst European nations led countries like Germany and Britain to expand the army and navy in preparation for war.

An agreement or promises to defend and help another country. In the early 1900’s, nations feared one another. Each nation was afraid another would invade or try to take over its territory. When an alliance is signed, those countries become known as Allies.

Imperialism is when a country takes over new lands or countries, and controls their government, economy, and culture.
