WHAT ARE ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINTS? An ecological footprint is a measure of human demand on the earths ecosystems, the amount of natural capital used each year. The foot print of a region can be used with the natural resources it generates. Carbon footprints are much different. Carbon footprints are the total sets of green house gas emissions caused by an ecosystem or an endangered natural habitat. However, ecotourism is the tourism of threatened, often dangerous natural ecosystems. People tour places like this mainly to help rebuild the ecosystem.

THE EFFECTS OF ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINTS IN SAINT JOHN NEW BRUNSWICK Ecological footprints can have a both good or bad effect on a community. For example, Saint John reduced their ecological footprint by 17% from 1996 to 2008. This means that the people of the community came together as one and cleaned up the city by reducing their use of technology and getting outside and rebuilding the city. By doing this, the human demand and pressure on Saint John dropped by a large amount. http://www.saintjohn.ca/en/home/news/newsreleases/FCMsustainabilityaw ard.aspx http://www.saintjohn.ca/en/home/news/newsreleases/FCMsustainabilityaw ard.aspx

EASTER ISLAND ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT The Easter islands is one of the most remote and gorgeous place in the world, well it was anyway. The first human beings that settled there compromised the entire islands natural resources. They did this by cutting down most of the tree population and used them to try and repair the man made statues. Also, Easter islands isn’t very big. That means when the first settlers cut the trees down, there was none left. https://www.newscientist.com/article/dn8825-did-humans-devastate-easter- island-on-arrival/ https://www.newscientist.com/article/dn8825-did-humans-devastate-easter- island-on-arrival/

SOUTH KOREA ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT What South Korea did was made logging a serious crime to replant the forest in the late 1960’s. They also mobilized the police force. Also, they increased use of coal in the 1970’s to further contribute to the forest recovery efforts by reducing the demand for fire wood. The outcome went from bare land to forest. http://blog.cifor.org/4723/turning-bare-land-into-a-green-nation-how-south- korea-recovered-its-degraded-forests?fnl=en http://blog.cifor.org/4723/turning-bare-land-into-a-green-nation-how-south- korea-recovered-its-degraded-forests?fnl=en

THE PROBLEM WITH RESOURCES THAT COME FROM OUTSIDE OUR REGION We have lost all resources in our current region. We have to get other resources from outside our region, which is a big problem. The reason this is a problem is because we are using our resources irresponsibly causing us to need to get more resources from other countries.

EXTRA CONCEPTS In 1992, the first academic publication about ecological footprints was created by a man named William Rees. Mathis Wackernagel developed the idea as a PhD dissertation at the University Of British Columbia in Vancouver Canada. Rees was keeping a watchful eye when this was going on. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecological_footprint

TRUE OR FALSE Ecological footprints can have a good or bad effect on a country. True or false? William Rees created the first academic publication about Ecological footprints in 1990. True or false?
13
SHORT ANSWER Why are natural resources so important to the economy? Why are the natural resources of Easter Islands so endangered?
14
LONG ANSWER How good do you think Sussex’ ecological footprint is? What can we do to improve it? How did South Korea reduce their ecological footprint? Give 3 reasons. Does a community need a lot of money to improve their footprint? Why or why not?
