 Trimester 1 › Conception to Month 3  Trimester 2 › Month 4 to 6  Trimester 3 › Month 7 to birth

The embryo forms layers that will develop into organs. The heart starts to beat, and the bones of the spinal column begin to form

Finger buds arise and the eyes are more obvious. Toe buds and eyelids will develop during this month, and nerve cells in the brain will connect.

By the end of your 12th week of pregnancy, the fetus is about 2.4 inches long from crown to rump. The spinal tail is gone and the face is distinct.

The eyelids completely cover the eyes, which will not reopen for nearly three more months. The legs and feet are well developed.

The fetus now weighs between 10 and 11 ounces, and the entire body is covered with downy fine hair called lanugo.

By the end of your sixth month of pregnancy, the fetus will weigh nearly two pounds and the crown-to-rump length will be over nine inches.

› Most fetuses turn to the head-down position now. Lungs continue to develop. Babies born at this stage usually survive but require intensive care.

› The body is more plump, and the lanugo hairs that once covered it are almost all gone. The baby can grasp firmly with his or her hands.

› At the end of 40 weeks, most babies will be about 7.5 pounds with a crown-to-rump length of nearly 15 inches and a total length of about 21 inches.
