Strategy Six: Summarizing and Note-taking Summarizing Sorting, selecting, and combining information. Note-taking Sorting, coding, and accessing information Both of these strategies require students to use higher order thinking skills. Students have to decide: What to keep? What to delete? What to replace?

Strategy Six: Summarizing and Note-taking These strategies are most effective in lessons that focus on new academic content. AVOID: These strategies should not necessarily be used in lessons involving more complex tasks (generating and testing hypotheses). Don’t assume that students instinctively know how to effectively summarize or take notes on their own. Provide modeling and guidance.

Strategy Six: Summarizing and Note-taking Example: A Rule-Based Summarizing Strategy: Take out the stuff that’s not important to understanding. Take out words that repeat information. Replace a list of things with one word that describes them. Find or create a topic sentence A teacher would model this process for students and then have them engage in guided practice.

Strategy Six: Summarizing and Note-taking With note-taking, no single form is correct but here are some Best Practices for note-taking: 1.Help students create notes as the information is being presented. *This shows students how to organize notes and draws attention to important concepts. 2. Provide a template or graphic organizer for students to use when taking notes. 3. Teach students a variety of note-taking formats: Webbing Informal Outlining Combination Notes Cornell Notes

Strategy Six: Summarizing and Note-taking Webbing – Using shapes, colors, and arrows to show relationships.

Strategy Six: Summarizing and Note-taking Informal Outlining- Creating headings with big ideas and concepts, using bullet points or other marks to record more specific information.

Strategy Six: Summarizing and Note-taking Combination Notes – Involves both linguistic and non-linguistic representation while note-taking Cornell Notes – More formal notes. Combo Notes
