USE OF THE PRESENT SIMPLE USE OF THE ADVERBS OF FREQUENCY USE OF THE PRESENT CONTINUOUS AS A FORM OF FUTURE

3 MAKING SUGGESTIONS 1 “Let’s…..”
Let’s = let us It is followed by the simple form of a verb Negative form: “let’s not + simple verb” Meaning = I have a suggestion for us Examples Let’s go to a movie Let’s not go to a movie Let’s stay at home instead

4 MAKING SUGGESTIONS 2 “why don’t….”
“Why don’t …” is used to make a friendly suggestion “Why don’t we …+ simple verb ” meaning = let’s…. “Why don’t you.+ simple verb ”meaning = I suggest you… “Why don’t I …” meaning = should I …? Examples Why don’t we go to a movie? Why don’t you come around at seven? Why don’t I give Mary a call?

5 MAKING SUGGESTIONS 3 “shall I / we…”
When shall is used with I or we in a question, the speaker is usually making a suggestion and asking another person if he / she agrees with this suggestion. This use of shall is relatively formal. Sometimes “shall we?” is used as a tag question* after let’s. (i) More informally “okay?” is used as a tag question. (ii) EXAMPLES Shall I open the window? Shall we leave at two? Let’s go, shall we?
