You will learn about these common neurological afflictions: Neuromuscular Disorders in Clinical Practice Dizziness and Vertigo Seizures/Epilepsy Disorders of Station and Gait, Movement, and Involuntary Movement Disorders Ischemic and Hemorrhagic Stroke Headache Coma and Brain Death Dementia Peripheral Neuropathy Multiple Sclerosis CNS Infections Sleep Disorders Back Pain Head Trauma Pediatric Neurology 3. You will need to know the following information about these topics Clinical presentation (the history of illness) Abnormal neurological signs (findings on examination) Appropriate laboratory and radiological evaluations Treatment

3. ORIENTATION: Your Neurology/Neurosurgery Clerkship will begin with a full day of orientation and lectures covering important basic information about neurological tests and important concepts. It is critical that you attend and be attentive. Dress is casual. Orientation day will end with a Neuro Exam Practice Session where you will have the opportunity to practice performing the neurological exam on your fellow classmates with faculty/residents present to answer questions and help with technique. CLINICAL EXPERIENCE: You will work Monday through Friday until all tasks are finished. This will normally be from 8:00 am until at least 4:00 pm. In addition, students assigned to an inpatient service will work one weekend day per weekend. During the rotation you will also be required to be on call twice. Call lasts for 6 hours and could be from 4:00-10:00 pm Monday through Friday or after rounds on Saturday and Sunday. You will need the following requirements completed and logged into your CERTTS program by the end of your rotation: 10 different diagnoses All students will be required to log in their CERTTS program 10 different diagnoses from patients you are directly assessing. Neuro Exam All students will be required to successfully perform a neurological exam on a patient. Your supervisory attending needs to observe you do the exam. Mid Clerkship Feedback It is required that faculty or resident provide you with mid clerkship feedback so you may improve your performance. Patient Interview Your supervising resident or faculty will watch you conduct one interview with patients (and/or family members). Lecture You will be asked to give one lecture to your team. This topic will be selected by you and your resident. Call You are required to be on call 2 times during the month. Call is 6 hours and must be signed off by either the resident or the attending. 4. REQUIRED LECTURE SERIES: There are mandatory “Live” lectures throughout the rotation which are available via polycom to Regional Campus Students. A calendar will be e-mailed to you prior to the start of your rotation. In addition to attending the “live” lectures you will be required to observe online lectures available on Oncourse. INDEPENDENT STUDY: To be successful on the NBME Final Exam and the OnCourse Lecture Series Quiz, didactic study will be a necessity. You will be provided 2 texts for use during the rotation: 1 on neuroanatomy and 1 clinical text (Blueprints in Neurology, 3 rd edition). We also recommend you use other sources for clinical information. ASSESSMENT OF COMMUNICATION SKILLS (Basic Clinical Skills Level 2): Your communication skills will be assessed through the following requirements: 1. Your supervising resident or faculty will watch you conduct one interview with patients (and/or family members, if relevant). 2. submit four Patient Communication Assessment Forms. These will be given to your patients or their family members to provide patient-based feedback about the effectiveness of your interaction. 3. You will be asked to give one lecture to your team. This topic will be selected by you and your resident. 4. Your residents and faculty will be assessing your communication skills in day to day contact with patients. This will be documented on the Clinical Performance Evaluation. Slide 3: Clerkship Structure

Slide 4: Assessment of Students Final grade for this clerkship will be composed of 3 assessments: 1.60% - At the end of the rotation you will take an NBME Clinical Neurology Exam. 100 questions; mean is 73; pass is 64. 2.30% - Clinical performance evaluated by faculty and residents. Assessment of: History taking and ability to perform a neurological examination Formulation of a diagnosis and to devise a plan for further investigation/treatment Rapport /communication with patients, colleagues and other medical personnel Knowledge base Quality of patient care Professionalism, ethics, moral reasoning (and all other competencies) 3. 10% - In the middle of the month, there will be a quiz on OnCourse based on the lecture and reading material which will be worth 10% of your overall grade. Attendance at the lecture series may be used as a modifying factor for the grade. The grade distribution will be approximately : 20% Honors 30% High Pass 50% Pass

Slide 5: Clinical Sites/Locations Students will be assigned to either of the following: 4 week rotation (ie adult neurology at IU) or 2 rotations each for 2 weeks (Riley for 2 weeks; IU adult for 2 weeks) Adult neurology (inpatient and outpatient) IU North IU West Methodist Hospital University Hospital Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center Wishard Hospital Regional Campus (Fort Wayne, Gary, Lafayette, South Bend, Terre Haute) (Bloomington will have neurology in the 4 th year) Pediatric neurology (2 or 4 weeks) Riley Hospital Neurosurgery (2 or 4 weeks) Methodist Hospital Riley Hospital Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center Preferences will be compiled in the spring of your 2 nd year.
