2 Aim: To understand the principles of growth and development. Learning objectives: Identify the principles of growth and development Explain children’s milestones in relation to their growth and development Identify stages and sequences of development Design and make and stages and sequences table

4 Starter activity: Look at the persons timeline that is sitting next to you, identify some differences and similarities between theirs and your own.

5 What does the word Holistic mean?

6 Word of the day: Holistic
Definition: Seeing the child as a whole person; emotionally, socially intellectually, physically, healthily, culturally and spiritually.

7 Principles of development
Development starts from the head and works down the body. Control of the nervous system and spine develops from the top of the head down to the base of the spine. The nervous system also develops from the spinal cord out to the extremities ( hands and feet).

2. All development happens in the same order, but can occur at different rates. Children develop in the same stages but its perfectly normal to develop at different rates. The child has to be able to walk before he or she can skip. One baby might learnt to walk at 10 months and the other at 18 months .

Whilst you are watching the video write down at least 6 developmental milestones of a child before the age of 5.

14 Activity minutes Using the books look for stages and sequences of development. Add to your timeline any milestones of development from Birth to 8.
