Spectrometer Solenoid Documents and Review Plans Michael S. Zisman Center for Beam Physics Accelerator & Fusion Research Division Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Spectrometer Solenoid Review Phone Meeting October 5, 2009

June 3, 2009Wrapup & Action Items - Zisman2 Outline Introduction Review documents Proposed review agenda Summary

June 3, 2009Wrapup & Action Items - Zisman3 Review Documents All documents will be posted at http://www- eng.lbl.gov/~spvirostek/Muon/SS_Review_Docs/ Separate folders will be made for —documents —slides (for this meeting and in-person review) —drawings —annotated photos of hardware —specifications —thermal model —schedule

June 3, 2009Wrapup & Action Items - Zisman4 Schedule Based on vendor input plus SV’s estimation of float —it assumes we will be successful, but that some things will take a bit longer than estimated by vendor o we do not plan for failure Possibility that magnet 2 will operate at full current but not as a closed system is considered explicitly —should know this by the end of the year If magnet 2 must be disassembled, plan is to reassemble magnet 1, test it, and ship it first —delay for this would be 2-3 months —delay for shipping magnet 2 about 6 months Disassembly of magnet 2 after it reaches full operating current likely to be expensive —in addition to schedule delay

June 3, 2009Wrapup & Action Items - Zisman5 Drawings Illustrate several cases: —present situation during last test of magnet 2 o three 2-stage coolers —magnet 2 configuration with additional single-stage cooler o 170 W at 55 K –this will be the next case tested (denoted “3+1”) —possible magnet 1 configuration with up to 5 cryocoolers o several options here –three 2-stage coolers plus one single-stage cooler (as for magnet 2) –four 2-stage coolers only magnet 1 has already been modified to permit this –four 2-stage coolers plus one single-stage cooler o 4+1 case is most likely to give desired result…but may be overkill –would likely try this first –each cool-down requires about $15K worth of LHe, so “trial and error” approach is costly

June 3, 2009Wrapup & Action Items - Zisman6 Thermal Model Estimates from Frederic Trillaud, who is modeling the magnet system —starting with shield first o present indications are that T from cooler stage 1 to top of shield is too big –this seems to be dominant issue thus far o impact of using 6061 instead of 1100 Al is minor (~4 K) —no evidence for any cold spots that would indicate problems with MLI o such assembly problems, if they existed, would not be in the model

June 3, 2009Wrapup & Action Items - Zisman7 Documents Summary document for reviewers will go here —outlines what has happened with both magnets Original magnet and power supply specifications will also be located here Most other magnet-related documents are posted as MICE notes —list has been given to Pasquale

June 3, 2009Wrapup & Action Items - Zisman8 Hardware Photos SV has prepared annotated set of photographs of key areas —should be self explanatory —we can augment this collection if reviewers request additional items
9
June 3, 2009Wrapup & Action Items - Zisman9 Specifications Here we will put materials specifications and QC-related information —this is being collected from vendor as best we can

June 3, 2009Wrapup & Action Items - Zisman10 Review Plans In-person review to be held at LBNL (on November 17?) —draft agenda for discussion has been prepared Agenda based on 1-1/2 day review —presentations on Day 1 —answers to follow-up questions, if any, morning of Day 2 —remainder of Day 2 morning for report preparation —(public) closeout for technical issues at 11:30 a.m. on Day 2 —if desired by committee, private meeting with LBNL management could take place after this o Steve Gourlay, AFRD Director o Jim Siegrist, Assoc. Lab Director for General Science –Siegrist is MCOG member from LBNL Would appreciate it if any personnel issues were discussed in the private meeting
11
June 3, 2009Wrapup & Action Items - Zisman11 Proposed Review Agenda Proposed agenda (next slide) has been prepared for comment —speakers (in particular Green) not guaranteed at this time —MICE Spokesperson and Review Committee Chair should approve or suggest modifications, ASAP —must settle on dates today, if possible, so I can reserve room o since there are only a few of us, I assume that no breakout rooms are needed –let me know if you prefer otherwise

June 3, 2009Wrapup & Action Items - Zisman13 Summary Review documents are being posted on the web as they become available Initial plans for magnets are understood —several branch points o magnet 2 reaches operating current and is closed system o magnet 2 reaches operating current and is not closed system —what do we do with magnet 1 in each case? We recommend proceeding with additional cryocoolers to deliver magnets as soon as possible —this will surely minimize delay, and perhaps cost to LBNL also o all of the additional coolers and cool-down costs are unbudgeted —MICE project management may have other views
