You will be able to: Use art to reflect a complex representation of the main idea of your cultural essay. You will do this by: Completing one of the two “Check Your Understanding” prompts on page 33.

3. Parallel StructureParallel Structure The use of similar grammatical structures to show that two or more ideas are similar in importance or meaning, or to provide emphasis. Words, phrases, clauses, and lists can be parallel. Parallel Words & Phrases:  Mr. Lessard likes hiking, swimming, and riding a bicycle.  The student wrote his essay quickly, accurately, and thoroughly.  He waited until the last minute to study for the exam, completed his lab problems in a careless manner, and lacked motivation.

Parallel Structure Cont’dParallel Structure Cont’d Parallel Clauses:  The teacher told the students that they should get plenty of sleep, that they should not worry too much, and that they should go over their notes.  I asked when the order would be ready, where the package should be delivered, and who would receive the package.

5. Parallel Structure Cont’dParallel Structure Cont’d Parallel Lists:  Basic training to become Batman should cover how to sneak around in the dark, hurt bad guys without killing them, and throw Batarangs accurately.  Any time you make a bulleted list, the items on that list should be parallel.

6. Parallel Structure Practice Write a sentence about the picture on the left by: Using parallel structure correctly. Utilizing between one and three vocabulary words accurately.

Complete your chosen prompt in a way that adds meaning to the main idea of your cultural essay.
