2 Sep 15, 2005 Compact data acquisition and power supply system designed for hostile environment condition concerning radiation and magnetic field 2 Summary A compact data acquisition and power supply system housed in a water cooled special crate has been designed for the readout of the TOF (Time Of Flight) detector of the Alice experiment at CERN. The Crate contains a 12 slot VME64X bus that houses 2400 multi-hit 25ps TDC channels (TDC Readout Module: TRM), a local Trigger Module (LTM), a Clock Distribution Module (CPDM) and a Data Readout Manager (DRM board) with two optical links and Ethernet. The same crate hosts the branch controlled power supply modules for the VME boards and the TOF detector front-end modules. The whole system shall be used close to the TOF detector and will work under moderate radiation and intense magnetic field (1.2 Gy/10 years TID, 5 KGauss,). The TDC boards house TDC chips developed by CERN/ECP-MIC Division (HPTDC). Due to the radioactive environment, an accurate choice of components is required and the VME boards implement protections from Single Event Latch-up and from Single Event Upset.

For ALICE/TOF careful design needed to handle SEU, Degradation for TID effects neglect able. Latchup protections needed. Magnetic field –The Crate Power Supply & Boards (TRM, DRM, CPDM, LTM) work under intense magnetic field: 5 K Gauss CAEN Power Supply design for hostile area (EASY) No cooling Fans: Water cooled system & T° sensors for safety

Each section is independently monitored and "protected" way (by a current-limiting device - MAX893L). An Atmel μC controls the Section’s Fault Indicators. SEU protection/detection (based on Radiation Tests) –FPGA : Vital sections use Flash based FPGA ACTEL (APA 600) Other sections use RAM based ALTERA FPGA (reprogrammed after a CRC error) –SRAM: CRC check implemented to identify data NOT valid –FLASH & Atmel μC (ATMEGA) No SEE observed –HPTDC LUT will be periodically monitored (CRC) + reload from Flash –Components: All Commercial devices radiation tested Radiation Tolerance

15 Sep 15, 2005 Compact data acquisition and power supply system designed for hostile environment condition concerning radiation and magnetic field 15 Cooling System Requirements –Electronics Max temperature 100°C. –Inlet cooling water temperatures and max temperature raise: Tin=15°C, Traise= 7 °C, Tout =22 °C –Available flow for each crate 4 l/min Crate power inventory –The total power dissipated for each TRM is 45 watt –In each crate are housed 9-10 TRM and the total power is 450 watt. –Considering to cool the power supplied the design power of the system is set to 1 Kwatt
