Professor Bert Steenbergen Behavioural Science Institute, Radboud University, The Netherlands Lecturer in the Department of Special Education Coordinator of several courses from the bachelor to the PhD level Professorial Fellow, Australian Catholic University Graduation at the Free University in 1992: Human Movement Sciences, (Honours) PhD in the social sciences in 2000 at the Radboud University Adapted movement behaviour following brain damage. An important feature of his work is the relation between fundamental research and the application of this research in the field of rehabilitation and education for children with motor and visual impairments.

Linking basic research to treatment protocols in childhood onset disability Professor Bert Steenbergen ACU Professorial Fellow

Basic research to unravel a clinical observation: EEG and Developmental Disregard Basic research to improve treatment for children with CP and DCD: Internal model deficit and motor imagery training Basic research to improve participation: Implicit and explicit motor learning and sports The links between basic research and (clinical) applications Together with our partners outside academics

Basic research to unravel a clinical observation: EEG and Developmental Disregard (the discrepancy between capacity and performance) Treatment of CP in the Pirate group: mCIMT-BiT Assessment tool developed by Pauline Aarts Clinical assessment of developmental disregard Understanding the mechanisms of developmental disregard: The role of attention Testing attention via EEG Using data to improve intervention

Basic research to improve treatment for children with CP and DCD : Internal model deficit and motor imagery training Developmental Coordination Disorder 2014 2013 Basic research: Children with CP and DCD share a similar neurocognitive deficit that affects their motor skill learning: internal model deficit Improving treatment see Wilson et al. (2002) and (submitted) The Internal model Cerebral Palsy 2013

Basic research to improve participation: Implicit and explicit motor learning and sports www.meedoenmetsport.nl Observation: Compared to children without movement restrictions, children with CP and DCD participate less in sports-related activities and society in general How can we facilitate motor performance (activities) in children with CP and DCD: Theory of implicit and explicit learning How can we apply this knowledge into practice to improve participation (training and coaching)

Development of a classification system Implicit and explicit learning in CP: Errorless learning Learning methods used: Observations in class and at sport clubs Observation with video Implicit 7.8%Explicit 93.2%

Thank you for your attention…. Questions & Discussion
