Happy Monday AP Psychology! Today: 1.Announcements 1.HW: 1.Read Ch. 7 pages 285-295 2.Conditioning Project 3.Ch. 7 Test Friday 1.Reviews Tuesday at Lunch and After School 2.Thursday at Lunch and after school with Ms. Gabriel 2.Warm up: Classical and Operant Conditioning 3.Learning Through Observation 1.Crash Course Video 2.Notes 3.Teen Sexual Behavior and Television EQ: What method of learning is best?

Classical vs Operant Conditioning Fill in the blanks below: Classical and Operant Conditioning demonstrate that learning happens through ___________ and ___________. Classical Conditioning is used in _______________ and relies on the association of a product with a __________. Operant Conditioning uses a systems of _____________________, rewards, and punishment. Classical and Operant Conditioning demonstrate that learning happens through association and reinforcement. Classical Conditioning is used in advertising and relies on the association of a product with a conditioned response. Operant Conditioning uses a system of positive and negative reinforcement, rewards and punishment.

Learning Through Observation Observational Learning – learning by observing others – Social Learning – Cognitive Learning Modeling – the process of observing and imitating a specific behavior

Mirror Neurons –frontal lobe neurons that fire when performing certain actions or when observing another doing so - may enable imitation and empathy.

Applications of Observational Learning Prosocial Behavior – Behavior that is positive, helpful, and constructive in regards to the group. Antisocial Behavior – Behavior that is aggressive, negative and destructive in regards to the group. “Imitation is the sincerest form of learning”

TV and Teen Behavior around Sexuality Across All Age Groups, Teens Who Saw the Most Sex on Television Were Twice as Likely to Initiate Intercourse Within the Next Year as Were Those Who Saw the Least Monkey See Monkey Do What does it mean to you that watching people ENGAGE in sex on TV increases sexual behavior in teens, and that watching teen mom increased interest in birth control and decreased teen birth rates? How might this information be interpreted to discuss the impact of violence portrayed on TV? How should violence be represented on Television?

Methods of Learning Questions of Efficacy…. Conditioning Observation Cognition Instinct/Intuition Difficulty in understanding what is at play – reinforcement, observation, or genetics.

Happy Tuesday – Farewell Till Monday! Today: 1.Warm-up: Ways to learn 2.Everybody (learn to) dance now! 1.Macarena and Negative Reinforcement 2.Gangnam style and Positive Reinforcement 1.Intrinsic Motivation 2.Extrinsic Motivation 3.Discussion and Debrief 1.Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Nervous system responses 2.Learning…? Study Session: At lunch after school today, Thursday at lunch and 7 th period. Chapter 7 – Keep working on your Projects

Warm up: Discuss, which method of learning do you think should be the primary method of learning in school? Why?

Learn to Macarena Learning- Permanent behavior change SHAPING of the (dance)steps happens first before the whole dance can be put together and you’ve reached acquisition of the full behavior (the dance) If you DON’T practice the dance you may suffer an Extinction of the learned behavior Songs examples of learning stimuli that is both DISCRIMINITIVE and Generalized Why?

Learn to Gangnam Style! Were you motivated by INTRINSIC or EXTRINSIC rewards/punishment ? Intrinsic – central and internal, ingrained in the task or the experience Examples: 1.I am intrinsically motivated to workout because it makes me feel good and I like feeling strong and powerful 2.I am intrinsically motivated to work hard in school because I find the information Im learning interesting and its important to me to be an informed voter, citizen, parent, friend, daughter and person. Extrinsic – exterior, connected to but not central to the task or experience – coming from someone else or outside of you. Examples: 1.I work out because I want other people to think I’m healthy, I work out because I want other people to think I’m sexy. 2.I work hard in school because I want to get good grades, I want to make a lot of money, I want other people to think I’m smart, I want to be important.

Reflection How is your sympathetic nervous system activated during the negative reinforcement? – How might this impact your learning? – What about WAITING for punishment How might this impact your learning (pros and cons) How is your parasympathetic nervous system? activated during the positive reinforcement – How might this impact your learning? – What about when you are WAITING for a reward How might this impact your learning (pros and cons)

Happy Block Day PSYCHOLOGY! Today: 1.Media Violence’s impact on child behavior 1.Read 2.Research 3.Discussion 2.DECISION (google form vote) HW: Study for Ch. 7 Test Review Session Thursday Rm. 204 Continue working on your conditioning project.
