Life as a Freshman Good News… More freedom More opportunities More choices More responsibility More expectations Variety of friends- Some classes 9-12 Not so Good News… o More freedom o More opportunities o More choices o More responsibility o More expectations o Little room for mistakes-Freshmen Year Counts!
4
Developmental Changes… As students go through high school, they change: Physically Emotionally Mentally Socially Academically Spiritually Economically Ethically While they work to become more responsible, independent, and confident. *Students move from dependent children to independent adults in only 4 years* Seek opportunities to “test drive” adulthood
5
Common Challenges Homework Missing and late work is the most common academic problem! All points count! Turn everything in. Some teachers do NOT accept late work or give extra credit! Time management With homework, friends and family, and extracurricular activities, many students struggle with balancing it all. Set aside a separate time & place each night for homework. USE A PLANNER! Asking for help The students who need help often don’t ask for it. Encourage your study to ask! Bring them with to conferences & review online progress reports for each class as a family! Self-Advocacy Finding their own voice: communicating what they need to be successful and following through Teachers are much more accommodating to students that come to them to get help (versus having the parent do it). Try to let your student solve the problem first, before “fixing it” for them.
6
Common Challenges Study Skills “I just freeze up on tests!” –One of the most “common complaints” Many students & parents assume test anxiety… but most students don’t know how to study! Tips: Set aside time separate from homework Limit distractions in quiet study place Take little bites-don’t rely on cramming Take good notes and review them Parents - - quiz your student Answer chapter questions in text Ask the teacher for suggestions & resources
