Romanticism Notes In 1803 the LA Purchase doubled the nation ’ s territory. NY ’ s population was 312,000. Authors found success for the first time in America, esp. in NY. Anti-slavery and feminist movements began. The USA ’ s power and existence was proven in the War of 1812.

Romanticism Notes Definition: an artistic movement that examined the inner feelings and emotions of the author or reader. The writing focused on the imagination rather than facts and logical reasons.

Romanticism Notes Characteristics: 1. A strong interest in nature and the supernatural 2. An emphasis on mystery 3. A strong belief in democracy

Literary Terms 1. Folk Tale 1. A short, simple story that is handed down, usually by word of mouth, from generation to generation 2. Characteristics: 1.Teaches a moral lesson 2.Stock characters 3.Unrealistic events

Literary Terms 2. Alliteration — the repetition of similar sounds at the beginnings of words Ex: “ While I nodded, nearly, napping …” 3. Consonance — the repetition of consonant sounds at the endings of words Ex: “ Raven, never …” “ Cat, mat, bat ”

Literary Terms 4. Assonance — the repetition of vowel sounds within words (musicality, gives meaning) Ex: “ apples always allure animals ” 5. Allusion — a reference to another literary work, figure, place, or event from history, religion, or mythology to make a concept more easily understood.
