8 Review: Atomic Structure
Nucleus: Proton: Neutron: Electron Cloud: Electron: Energy Level: The electron cloud is divided into levels.

9 Energy Levels (copy in your notes)
Energy Level: The electron cloud is divided into levels Electrons occupy the lowest available energy level first. Energy Levels: (2-8-8) 1: two electrons 2: eight electrons 3: eight electrons 4: after the third energy level has 8 electrons, the electrons will begin being placed in the 4th level. *After the first 20 elements additional electrons can fill in previously empty orbitals. The 3rd energy level can hold 18 electrons when completely full.

10 How do electrons fill energy levels?
Electrons occupy the lowest energy level first. Once an energy level is full it will occupy the next level. How will the electrons be arranged in a helium atom?

11 Arrange the electrons. (draw in your notebook)

14 Notes: Valence Electrons (copy in your notes)
Valence electrons refer to the number of electrons in an atom’s outermost occupied energy level. Example: Carbon has 6 electrons total. Carbon has 4 valence electrons.

15 How many valence electrons?
