Reading Reading Street © 2008 by Scott Foresman Comprehensive literacy Balanced Reading Program: – Daily 5 – Read to Self, Read to Someone, Work on Writing, Word Work, Listen to Reading – Guided Reading Groups- This grouping is flexible, and may change throughout the year. Text is chosen at an appropriate level for each group. – fluency, phonics, vocabulary, writing, comprehension, grammar Reading skills/strategies weekly quizzes Written response to reading Reading at Home Your child will be responsible for reading five nights per week and recording it on a weekly log. For the first marking period they will need to read 15 minutes each night.

Spelling Weekly list follows a phonemic pattern or phonics rule 12 words each week + 2 word part studies Writing Narrative, Opinion, Informational, Research Writing pieces will be aligned to Pennsylvania Core Standards

IMPORTANT! Field Trip – Washington, D.C. – November 5 th (Thursday) – Chaperones will be needed! YOU MUST HAVE CLEARANCES – ask Mrs. Miller in the office for more information Camp Hebron – Week of May 9 th - 13 th – Details to be sent home during the year. PSSA Testing & Make-ups – Testing window for State is April 11 th – 29 th – Please do not schedule any vacations or appointments during this time.

Please Remember… Musical Instrument Lessons (Band & Orchestra) – Students are responsible for making up work they miss (usually at recess) – Lessons for Band (Day 1); Lessons for Orchestra (Day 6) Birthday Treats - Contact me prior to sending in snack - Please be aware of allergies. - Please do not send in birthday invitations to be passed out.

Student Responsibilities Homework books, getting mail, handing in homework Students will transition into taking class notes on their own Students are expected to get class work finished in time permitted Student Organization – Organization is crucial for 5 th grade – Desks will be orderly and clean at all times (Weekly checks) Signing-Out – Sign out sheet is for restroom, nurse or office. – Class breaks for restroom after special – Please send in a small water bottle for hot days

How You Can Help Your Child Read to your child OR with your child Write a note to your child – put it in their homework book or lunchbox Help your child get a public library card Pre-test your child before scheduled tests (Review study guides, too!) Make sure your child eats breakfast Give your child a special place at home to do homework Help study math facts Use resources on-line for practice and review
