Thesis Statements Argument and Direction

Every question is essentially asking… What does this mean? How do you know?

What is a thesis? It is a roadmap for the rest of your essay. It tells the reader what to expect from the rest of your essay. It often makes a claim that others might dispute. It ALWAYS offers a way to understand a subject.

A GOOD thesis has three parts… Topic – author, piece you are discussing Claim – action verb, abstracts (tone, theme, purpose) Direction – figurative language/ rhetorical devices, concretes (imagery, diction, symbolism, repetition, etc.)

Free-Response Question In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, there are many themes, several of which are communicated through Twain’s use of satire and symbolism. In an essay, explore one theme in the book and discuss how either symbolism or satire helps to convey the message of the story.

Example In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the theme of society vs. nature is conveyed through Mark Twain’s symbolic use of the river, the weather and the forest.
